Gift wrapped in the glamour and glitz of Manhattan
December 2022
Week 1 Greenwich Village.
AIRBNB in a great location at 33 Carmine Street – almost adjacent to the former residence of American painter Jackson Pollock
Quiet start to week as spent 1 day getting medical treatment, but we certainly made up for it:
A stroll around the village, where we found the best crib ev
Even a Mexican busker on the subway train, playing Spanish guitar and belting out Christmas favourites
Greenwich Village Chorale Holiday Concert at Judson Memorial Church (non-denominational)
Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City was just that – spectacular
John Lennon vigil at Strawberry Fields, Central Park. Sublime.
Week 2 Greenwich Village
Dyker Heights Brooklyn with tour guide, Shanel. Largely Italian population who spends $000s every year decorating their home and gardens.
Phanthom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre for the birthday girl. Cheapest seats, up in the gods, but with a perfect view of the stage, the chandelier and the roaming Phanthom.
Surreal caroling with West Village Chorale Society around Greenwich Village.
Shopping at Macy’s and Tiffany’s
Gigantic Christmas tree at Rockerfeller Center
The historic Washington Square Arch, synonomous with the Pogues, Fairytale of New York.
Historic Pubs:
Minetta Tavern, frequented by societies rich and famous.
The Stonewall Inn is a national historic landmark and site of 1969 riots that launched the gay rights movement.
Fantastic night at Marie’s Crisis Cafe. Pure, unadulterated musical theatre without a Mama Mia or We will Rock You number to be heard!
You see, Anything Goes (pun intended) providing the music was composed for a musical production for stage or silver screen.
Accomplished pianist, powerful voices of ex Broadway chorus lines and an audience for whom musical theatre is staple food. Absolutely blown away.
White Horse Tavern Hudson St
Dylan Thomas allegedly drank 21 straight whiskies and died on the spot of Alcohol poisoning. At $43 for 4 pints of ale not much chance of it happening to Allen and I!
The Dead Poet, Upper West Side, where the owner combines his passion for Irish pubs and literature.
We had the best seats in the house, the Guinness was superb and the decor fitting of such an iconic establishment.
Week 3/4 Greenwich Village
Chelsea, west Village Christmas houseit with two delightful cats.
Coney Island – wish we had visited on the final day of our trip.
Macy’s– the return. ‘Proppa sale’. Picked up several Santas’ and toys for the grandkids. It will be Chrsitmas before we know it!
